Express Signs is pleased to announce the arrival of a new printer that is changing the way we do business. The HP Scitex LX850 Industrial Printer is Hewlett Packard’s largest latex printer. Express Signs has the only one of its type in this area. This printer has a smaller environmental impact because of the use of eco-friendly, water-based inks that are non-flammable and non-combustible.

At 126 inches wide and at a resolution of 1200 DPI, it boasts the ability to print up to billboard-size signs, vehicle wraps, and banners as well as helps to lower costs. Designer Israel Saxton is pleased with the performance of the machine stating, “This is wide format printing at its best. With the latest in HP printing at our finger tips, I can guarantee, our customers will not find a better quality product anywhere else.” Express Signs acquired the printer through a partnership with HP and is a certified eco-friendly provider.

Arrival of the printer comes at a good time for Express Signs as we celebrate 20 years in business. This success can only be attributed to the patriotism of the residents of the Kingsport and Tricities areas. Express Signs hopes to continue to grow and flourish in the Tricities for years to come. “We are very excited to bring the first eco-friendly printer to the region. This gives us the ability to offer signs and banners for a lower cost and in a much faster turnaround time than we have in the past. CASA for Kids, Inc., serving abused and neglected children in Sullivan and Hawkins Counties,

cordially invites you to attend the CASA Red Shoe Gala, CASA's biggest fundraising special

event of the year. As Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz stated, "There's no place like home."

CASA for Kids is currently able to serve 51% of the neglected children coming to the attention of

its juvenile courts, yet every neglected/abused child needs to have their very own trained Court

Appointed Special Advocate. CASA helps bring neglected children the enhanced hope of a safe

permanent home where they can thrive and grow up to become productive adults.

Lieutenant Governor Ron Ramsey will auction off a few live auction items right after dinner.

Guests can then dance to The Extraordinaires entertainment band, enter or just watch the Red

Shoe Contest presided over by our juvenile court judges and even buy a Valentine gift chosen

from over 200 donated silent auction items. As needed funds are raised for CASA to help more

Kingsport City Schools Board of Education Names Dr. Lyle Ailshie as Superintendent

Kingsport - The Kingsport City Schools Board of Education has selected Dr. Lyle Ailshie to serve as the next Superintendent of Schools. Dr. Ailshie will replace Dr. Richard Kitzmiller, who retired on December 30, 2011 after serving as KCS Superintendent for more than nine years.

"We are very pleased that Dr. Ailshie has accepted our invitation to serve as Superintendent of Kingsport City Schools," said BOE President Dr. Randy Montgomery. "He brings a wealth of knowledge, experience, and enthusiasm that I'm sure will be well received by our teachers, students, families, and community. We are excited and feel fortunate to have him lead our system forward during this important time in Tennessee education."

Before coming to KCS, Dr. Ailshie served for eleven years as Director of Schools for Greeneville (TN) City Schools. During his tenure, Greeneville City Schools has been recognized as one of Tennessee's highest performing school systems. Dr. Ailshie was instrumental in leading several system initiatives, including development of expanded technology, foreign language, dual credit, and professional development offerings. He guided the system through the implementation process for school-based data analysis and priority setting, and providing leadership and oversight for facility projects totaling over $35 million.
Dr. Ailshie is a past President of the Tennessee Organization of School Superintendents and was named the 2005 Tennessee Superintendent of the Year.

Prior to his tenure as GCS Director of Schools, Dr. Ailshie held the role of Greeneville's Assistant Superintendent of Instruction. His background also includes experience as an Assistant Principal at Morristown-Hamblen High School West, as well as serving as a principal, teacher, and coach in Hawkins County Schools.

"It is with humility and excitement that I accept the position of Superintendent of Kingsport City Schools," said Dr. Ailshie. "Its reputation, tradition of excellent teachers, and outstanding leaders make this a unique opportunity. While it will be a few weeks until I officially assume the position, I will be gathering information and working to ensure a smooth transition. I look forward to working alongside all employees as we seek ways to provide a world-class educational program for students."

Dr. Ailshie received his Doctorate of Education (1996) and Master of Arts in Teaching (1984) from East Tennessee State University. He completed a Bachelor of Science/Sociology from Francis Marion College in Florence, South Carolina in 1981. His official start date with Kingsport City Schools has yet to be determined.

As the youngest of five in a family of musicians, Connye didn't have to look far for encouragement when her love of singing took off. The scope of Connye's career has included most every facet of the industry…studio, stage, television and film. She has sung jingles for Van Camps Food and Major League Baseball, hosted a PBS Literacy Link educational series produced by KET; been the voice of the "WB" on a number of Warner Brothers jingles across the country, and has even sung country…as a background vocalist on the Elton John/Tammy Wynette duet "What a Woman Needs". Her film, theater and television credits include the feature film "The Client", "Proud Heart", starring Lorrie Morgan, and the role of Ramona in the 2000 independent film festival favorite, "Existo". Connye has toured nationally with Columbia Artists and vocalist Jennifer Holliday, and as featured vocalist with Modern Jazz Tuba Project; The Nashville Jazz Orchestra and with her own award-winning trio of musicians. Public Art RFP for Benches

KINGSPORT, TN - Public Art Kingsport invites proposals from artists for conceptual drawings to be used in the fabrication of benches that will be installed near the parking garage in Downtown Kingsport. Up to 5 designs will be selected and artists will receive $250 for each completed design.

There is no pre-determined theme for artwork but PAK suggests that the content reflect the vibrancy of downtown, the beauty of the region, or landmarks of the community.

Individual artist, consortia of artists, and organizations who work and/or live within 100 miles of Kingsport are encouraged to apply. There is NO entry fee.

Drawings will be used to produce custom laser cut steel panels for benches. Benches will be professionally fabricated and finished with black powder-coat paint. Artists will have the opportunity to design the laser cut steel panels that will fit into the backrest area of the benches. The dimensions for each panel will be 69" x 13". Please see guidelines and design template attached.

All proposals must be received by Friday, March 2, 2012 at 5 PM. "Conceptual Drawings" is being defined as a well-thought-out concept and does not, as yet, need to be in its completed form. Selected artists will need to work with the fabricator for finished product.

Selection committee will include Public Art Kingsport members as well as Downtown Kingsport Association design members.

Public Art Kingsport invites proposals from artists for exhibitions in the following gallery locations: City Hall, Atrium Gallery of the Renaissance Center, Kingsport Higher Education Center, Regional Center for Health Education, V.O. Dobbins Center. Proposals will be considered for exhibition in all galleries. All entries must be two-dimensional.

Exhibitions will run two months. There is no exhibition theme and all two-dimensional media will be considered. Exhibit locations will depend on space and availability. All original works should be appropriately finished for display and/or hanging (i.e. matted framed, and equipped with appropriate hanging hardware). Exceptions can be made for youth art.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of East Tennessee Celebrates National Mentoring
Month

KINGSPORT, TN (January 12, 2012) - This January, as part of National
Mentoring Month, Big Brothers Big Sisters of East Tennessee wants to
make people aware of their need for more adult mentors, or Big's. Big
Brothers Big Sisters is encouraging all members of the community,
including the local media, to participate in National Mentoring Month.
Currently, there are more than 50 children on the waiting list to
receive a Big Brother or Sister and you could make the difference in a
child's life.

"National mentoring month is a time to pay tribute to the Big Brothers
Big Sisters volunteers, families, staff and donors and to encourage
others to 'Start Something' to extend our reach," said CEO of Big
Brothers Big Sisters of East Tennessee, Myra Yeatman. "We hold ourselves
accountable for the proven youth outcomes that are unique to Big
Brothers Big Sisters mentoring programs, including academic achievement;
avoidance of risky and delinquent behaviors and higher self esteem and
aspirations."

Big Brothers Big Sisters of East Tennessee will celebrate National
Mentoring Month with a host of events honoring their supporters -
volunteers, donors, parents and staff members who work together to
provide careful mentor matching and support services for children who

Kingsport, TN - Latest New Home Sales Numbers Suggest Market Rise Strengthening.

New home sales climbed year-over-year in September in the Kingsport, TN market, and the increase was greater than August 2011. New home sales moved from three a year earlier to seven after the figure moved from four in August 2010 to eight in August 2011.

A total of 92 new homes were sold during the 12 months that ended in September, up from 88 for the year that ended in August.

New home sales were seven of the 228 total sales, up on a percentage basis from three of 278 a year earlier. Sales of new and existing homes dropped year-over-year in September after also falling in August year-over-year.

Pricing and Mortgage Trends

The average per-unit price of new homes was $135,042 in September 2011, moving south from $172,133 a year earlier. This was on the heels of a 85.9% rise in August year-over-year.

Average mortgage size on new homes fell from $128,380 to $8,910. Average mortgage size on new homes went from $139,410 in August 2010 to $78,212 in August 2011.

Other Market Trends

The share of new home sales made up by attached units has risen while the share belonging to single-family homes has fallen. Attached sales made up one of seven new home sales after accounting for no part of sales a year earlier. Meanwhile, single-family homes made up six of seven new home sales after making up all of sales a year earlier.

Foreclosures and real estate owned (REO) sales remained a drag on the market. Together, foreclosures plus REO sales accounted for 30.8% of existing home sales. In September 2010, they made up 24.0%. The percentage of existing home sales involving foreclosures rose to 20.8% in September from 8.7% a year earlier while REO sales as a percentage of existing home sales slipped to 10.0% from 15.3% a year earlier.

American Cancer Society Relay for Life

The Kingsport Relay for Life Committee will have a Team Kickoff on Thursday, January 19 at 6 PM at RCAM. This is an opportunity for people to find out about the Relay for Life event in Kingsport, learn about forming teams, and how they can help the American Cancer Society fund more research, help more victims and their families in Sullivan County. Sullivan county has 4,648 cases of cancer diagnosed annually and over 400 deaths due to cancer each year. In one day in Tennessee, 97 people will be diagnosed with cancer, 81 patients or families will stay at a Hope lodge (we are working on one in Johnson City), and 797 people will be seeking answers the American Cancer Society can provide with our help. We would love to have a large crowd come to this fun and informative meeting. The actual relay will June 1 and 2, 2012 in downtown Kingsport. Thank you for helping to spread the word.

This isn't really Kingsport related, but regional-- more specificially Damascus, VA. Many of us in Kingsport who hike and bike enjoy going to Damascus which is now one a finalist for "coolest small towns in 2012." January 31, 2011) is the last day for voting. When the email was sent out, it was in first place. Now, a town in NY state holds first place.

Greetings!

Welcome to the first workshop of 2012! January's workshop will focus on Pablo Picasso. I have listed a few links to your left which will lead to interactive and informative sites regarding Picasso that you and your child should enjoy!

Picasso was a Spanish painter, draughtsman, and sculptor. He is one of the most recognized figures in 20th-century art. He is best known for co-founding the Cubist movement and for the wide variety of styles embodied in his work.

Picasso demonstrated uncanny artistic talent in his early years, painting in a realistic manner through his childhood and adolescence; during the first decade of the twentieth century his style changed as he experimented with different theories, techniques, and ideas.

Picasso once said concerning pieces of art: "One must also know when he did them, why, how, in what circumstances."

ART We Talented

Ages 18 months to 5 years

In this class, students will learn about Picasso through taking apart objects and "analyzing" them in terms of their shapes. They will also work on the letter "P", scissor cutting techniques, proper grip of a pencil and painting.

This workshop is on Thursday, January 12 from 10 a.m. until 11 a.m. in Room 230 of the Renaissance Center and the cost is $5 per child.

Arts4Kids

Ages 6 - 12 years
In this class, students will learn about Picasso through taking apart objects and "analyzing" them in terms of their shapes. They will also be exploring Picasso's self portraits and will draw, distort and paint their own self-portrait. Students will also study the art of collage and the instructor will touch on Picasso's Blue and Rose periods.

This workshop will be held on Saturday, January 28 from 1 p.m. - 3 p.m. in Room 303 of the Renaissance Center and the cost is $10.

Public Art RFP for Banners

KINGSPORT, TN -

Public Art Kingsport and Engage Kingsport invite proposals from artists for conceptual images and artwork to be used in the fabrication of banners for the parking garage in Downtown Kingsport. Banners will be 5 ft. wide x 14 ft. high on the Shelby Street side of the garage.

There is no pre-determined theme for artwork but PAK suggests that the content reflect the vibrancy of downtown, the beauty of the region, or landmarks of the community.

Individual artist, consortia of artists, and organizations who work and/or live within 100 miles of Kingsport area are encouraged to apply. There is NO entry fee.

All proposals must be received by Friday, March 2, 2012 at 5 PM.

Selection committee will include Public Art Kingsport members as well as Downtown Kingsport Association design members. Selected artists will receive $100 for each completed design.

Wellmont supports free public internet access point on rooftop

KINGSPORT – When a citywide initiative gets a boost from a community mainstay, the information superhighway runs more smoothly.

Holston Valley Medical Center now hosts a wireless relay point of presence on its rooftop, which provides a high capacity backbone transit for free Internet signal to the surrounding area. The wireless transmitters are capable of providing a signal up to three miles at 54 megabytes in support of the Wi-Fi initiative for downtown Kingsport.

"Holston Valley is proud to offer this service to our community," said Virginia Frank, the hospital's president. "As Kingsport's flagship hospital, we play a major role in the community's development and are pleased to empower our neighbors with the Internet access that is so vital to the functioning of today's society."

The hospital already provides free, easy-to-use Wi-Fi inside the facility for patients and visitors. Now, with the transmitter, anyone in the surrounding area can access the same service, even if they are not hospital patrons.

Officials from Holston Valley, Wellmont Health System and Wellmont Foundation worked together to clear the necessary roof space for the transmitter and ensure the space would be provided for free. The service is part of the Greater Kingsport Alliance for Development's Kingsport Wireless initiative, which has placed transmitters throughout the city.

With the transmitters in place, any Kingsport resident or visitor can access free Wi-Fi from any wireless-enabled device.

"The Wi-Fi is a really positive thing for Kingsport," said Terry Cunningham, executive director of the Kingsport Housing and Redevelopment Authority and secretary for Greater Kingsport Alliance for Development. "It's a great service to provide for visitors, and also for our low-income families."

The goal of Kingsport Wireless is to use the Wi-Fi from the transmitters to help provide economic development, education and public safety and improve quality of life for Kingsport and its residents.

Kingsport Wireless also opens up educational and informational opportunities that otherwise would be unavailable, Cunningham said.

The wireless project began in 2005 when the Kingsport Housing and Redevelopment Authority, City of Kingsport, Kingsport Office of Small Business Development and Entrepreneurship and Kingsport Economic Development Board launched a pilot project to offer Wi-Fi access in downtown Kingsport.

Since then, several community businesses, such as Holston Valley, have provided space for the transmitters, which send out enough signal strength to cover much of the downtown area.

"We'd really like to thank Holston Valley and the rest of these businesses," Cunningham said. "Hopefully, our wireless project can keep growing to cover the entire city."

• KINGSPORT — Jeff Fleming, Kingsport’s assistant city manager, has been named vice chairman of The American Association of Retirement Communities (AARC) for 2012 and 2013.

The organization also announced it will hold its annual conference in Kingsport next October, according to AARC executive director Wade Adler.

Fleming has developed and manages a community blog and has been involved in the “Move To Kingsport” program since its inception six years ago. He is a frequent speaker on the benefits of research and tracking as it relates to relocation. He holds a bachelor’s degree in political science and a master’s degree in urban planning from East Tennessee State University and is a member of the American Institute of Certified Planners.

The AARC also named three other officers for 2012 - 2013, including Ramay Woody Winchester of Paris, Tenn., as chair; Joe Verdoorn of Austin, TX, secretary; and Bill Houghton of Savannah, Ga., treasurer.

The American Association of Retirement Communities is a not-for-profit professional association, established in 1994 for the purpose of promoting the economic enhancement of communities through the promotion of retiree attraction as an economic development strategy.

New Show for Bays Mountain Planetarium!

I wanted you to know that a new show is starting this weekend in the planetarium theater at Bays Mountain! It is entitled "Appalachian Skies - Winter." It is a brand-new live show that takes our visitors on a journey of the current winter sky. It is designed to take advantage of many cool features of both our Powerdome digital system and our fantastic optical sky projector. The show was designed and programmed by Bays Mountain's Jason Dorfman, Astronomy & Space Sciences Program Administrator - Educational Interpreter. The show is our alternate offering for the weekends of the months of January and February at 2 p.m.

Our current feature presentation is "The Case of the Disappearing Planet." It's a fun show that looks at what we call a planet. Of course, it covers the status of Pluto. It also shows that this labeling change happened 200 years ago with the discovery of the asteroids. The shows' main character, Skye Watcher, is a savvy, 1940's-style gumshoe. It is shown at 4 p.m. Tues.-Fri. and 1 p.m. & 4 p.m. on the weekends.

Come by the Park and enjoy these shows along with great nature programs and our Park's natural beauty!

The QUEST High Performing Hospitals collaborative allows hospitals nationwide to share best practices and compare data on patient safety, clinical outcomes, cost of care, and patient satisfaction, with the goal of improving all metrics for the benefit of the patient. Participation in the collaborative is strictly voluntary.

Over the past 30 months, QUEST member hospitals have saved 25,235 lives and reduced health care spending by $2.85 billion through the delivery of high-quality, evidence-based care. While the average cost of care nationwide has increased 21 percent, cost at member hospitals has increased only 4 percent.

"We chose to participate in the QUEST collaborative because we want to be proactive in providing the safest environment, best clinical care for our patients, along with the best value for their health care dollar," said Tamera Fields, MSHA's vice president of quality. "When we collaborate to share our patient outcomes data and best practices with other member hospitals, we are able to take the very best of what works nationwide and apply it here at home."

Of the 120 facilities recognized as Top Performing Hospitals, 95 were eligible to receive monetary awards as charter members of the QUEST collaborative since 2008. All four MSHA facilities recognized will receive monetary awards.

Art Guild to exhibit at Kingsport City Hall

Public Art Kingsport presents The Kingsport Art Guild as part of its Art in Public Places program. The Kingsport Art Guild is sponsoring the show "Face Up! Kingsport", a unique art project involving the citizens of Kingsport. Artists have asked permission to photograph random individuals in order to do their portraits. All types of people are included: young, old, well known, not so well known. Artists have executed these portraits in their favorite medium: oil, pencil, watercolor, collage, etc. and all levels of skills are represented. The portrayals are painted in a six inch square format and all will hang together at City Hall at 225 West Center Street during the months of January and February, 2012.

The public is invited to attend the reception at City Hall on Tuesday, January10, from 5-7:00 pm. The exhibit and reception are free and open to the public.

We are not only reliant and appreciative of your donations, we support up-cycling! Here at KTG we encourage you to prevent items from going to the landfill. We would love it if you would think to pass along your construction project leftovers. Paint, lumber, nails, hardware etc. As you are putting away holiday decorations and cleaning out closets, please consider donating unwanted items. Left over paint, even small amounts of any color is very useful. Costume leads can use your old curtains and large amounts of fabric. We are always on the look out for unusual items, funky shoes, wigs, costume jewelry, purses and hats. Office supplies such as printer paper, tape, notebooks....

Kingsport Theatre to offer youth drama workshops and a free musical theatre club for all ages to kick off 2012.

Love to sing? Enjoy musical theatre - show tunes - Love Broadway... Have a passion for live theatre? This group will begin meeting regularly in February 2012 with an initial meeting on January 5 at 7PM at the Renaissance Center Theatre. Serina Marshall & Scott Elliott will be guiding and directing your voices while bringing out the best in all of you as you make new friends and learn music. Open to all abilities and ages, no auditions, FREE to join. Under age 13 please bring an adult partner.

Youth & Teen Workshops - Theatre is a Dream - Come explore some of our favorite theatre "-isms" including Surrealism, Symbolism, Expressionism and more... Practice with some "Super-realistic" material and finish by creating and performing in your own non-traditional, experimental theatrical pieces! Student's choice to perform on stage. Classes are appropriate for ages 7 - 12 & 13 - 18.

Performance January 20 at 7PM
