Keep Kingsport Beautiful receives $1,000 grant award

Kingsport, Tennessee – Keep Kingsport Beautiful is excited to announce it has received a $1,000 cash award from Keep America Beautiful as part of a nationwide effort sponsored by Nestlé Waters North America to encourage local PET (plastic bottle) recycling during the 2010 Great American Cleanup, the nation’s largest community improvement program, which takes place annually from March 1 through May 31.

Nestlé ® Pure Life® Purified Water, the Official National Bottled Water Sponsor of the Great American Cleanup, worked with Keep America Beautiful to further energize PET recycling activities. This year a new Great American Cleanup record for PET recycling was set – a grand total of 266 million bottles were recycled. Keep Kingsport Beautiful contributed 81,540 pounds of plastic bottles to the overall effort, thereby receiving a Nestlé® Pure Life® PET Recycling Award as one of the top PET recyclers during the 2010 campaign.

“This award is a true testament to our community,” said Megan Watson, director of Keep Kingsport Beautiful. “Without the help of our generous sponsors and our many volunteers, none of this would have taken place. It’s inspiring to know that we played a role in collecting a record amount of recyclables this year.”

Keep Kingsport Beautiful, in collaboration with various corporate sponsors, coordinates more than 30 cleanup events each year during the Great American Cleanup.

“Keep America Beautiful congratulates Keep Kingsport Beautiful for its plastic bottle recycling accomplishments during the 2010 Great American Cleanup,” said Gail Cunningham, senior vice president of Keep America Beautiful and managing director of the Great American Cleanup. “Through your PET recycling efforts and the efforts of other organizations in communities across America, a record-breaking number of bottles were recycled – a record that Keep Kingsport Beautiful should be proud of.”

Nestlé® Pure Life® PET Recycling Awards were awarded to 24 KAB affiliates that collected the most pounds of PET for recycling based on population served. Eight awards were given in three population categories: small (under 50K), medium (50K – 250K) and large (over 250K).

Nestlé Waters also partners with KAB on community recycling programs, and serves as a National Sponsor for Keep America Beautiful’s Great American Cleanup and America Recycles Day.

Keep Kingsport Beautiful is a cooperative partnership between the city of Kingsport and the Kingsport Area Chamber of Commerce. An affiliate of Keep America Beautiful, Keep Kingsport Beautiful has won more than 60 national, state and environmental awards.
