Symphony of the Mountains Announces 64th Season
Symphony of the Mountains, under the direction of Music Director/Conductor Cornelia Laemmli, will open their 2010-2011 season on Saturday, August 28 at 8:00pm at the Toy F. Reid (Eastman) Center in Kingsport. The program, titled "A Night at the Movies", will feature a wide array of classical music adapted for the screen as well as original film scores. Some of the adaptations include Richard Strauss' Also Sprach Zarasthustra, Mascagni's Intermezzo from "Cavelleria Rusticana" and Elgar's Pop and Circumstance No. 1. Selections from ever-popular films Star Wars, Forrest Gump, Lord of the Rings and Titanic will also be performed along with a tribute to Henry Mancini and themes from various James Bond movies. Patrons are invited to dress as their favorite movie character for the concert and attend a
post-concert gathering at Kingsport Grocery Company Restaurant downtown. Best costume prizes will be awarded.
On October 2 at 8:00pm the Symphony will present an all-Beethoven program – the Coriolan Overture, Symphony No. 3 ("Eroica", which is Italian for "heroic") and Piano Concerto No. 4 featuring soloist David Brunell at the Toy F. Reid Center in Kingsport. Music scholars have often credited Symphony No. 3 as the ending of the Classical period of music and the beginning of the Romantic period due to its extended length and great range of emotion. Beethoven's fourth piano concerto is in three movements and is considered one of the key works in piano concerto repertoire. Piano soloist David Brunell has performed internationally and currently serves on the keyboard faculty at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville.
"Once Upon a Time…", a concert based on well-known stories, will be performed in Abingdon on Saturday, October 30 at 3:00pm at the Southwest Virginia Higher Education Center and on Sunday, October 31 at 3:00pm at the J. W. Adams Combined School in Pound, VA. Collaborative participants include staff and music students from UVA-Wise and the Appalachian Children's Theatre.
The annual Wellmont Holiday Concert will be presented on Saturday, December 4 at 3:00pm at the Toy F. Reid Center in Kingsport. Joining Symphony of the Mountains will be Voices of the Mountains, Dr. W. Patrick Flannagan, Conductor, and Mountain Empire Children's Choral Academy under the direction of Jane DeLoach Morison. They will perform Rutter's Gloria as well as popular seasonal favorites.
On January 23, Symphony of the Mountains will present "From Baroque to Brazil" at 8:00pm in the Kegley Auditorium of Harrison-Jones Memorial Hall at Virginia Intermont College in Bristol, VA. This concert will feature music for chamber orchestra, including Rosauro's Concerto for Marimba and String Orchestra. Marimba soloist will be Benjamin Ivey, the 2010 winner of the Elizabeth Harper Vaughn Concerto Competition.
Symphony of the Mountains proudly presents an all-Brahms program on March 19 at 8:00pm at the Toy F. Reid Center in Kingsport. The concert will begin with Brahms' Tragic Overture and be followed by the masterwork, Requiem. Joining the orchestra are Voices of the Mountains, Dr. W. Patrick Flannagan, Conductor, the UVA-Wise Choir, and The Civic Chorale, David Hendricksen, Director. Soloists are Cecily Nall, soprano, and Andrew Wentzel, Bass-baritone.
