This one's for the girls: Mammograms, freebies available at Comprehensive Breast Center event

KINGSPORT – Mother's Day weekend is a special time for women, and Holston Valley Medical Center wants to add its own touch while giving females a chance to take care of their health.

On Saturday, May 8, Holston Valley's Comprehensive Breast Center is hosting Spring Spa Day, an event that will add a little fun to the mix. Women who undergo a mammogram that day can also receive free massages, "Satin Hands" treatments and bra fittings.

The Comprehensive Breast Center is located in the Holston Valley Outpatient Center on the Eastman Outpatient Campus, 103 W. Stone Drive, Kingsport.

Clinical Coordinator Leslie Gilliam said this might be an ideal way for mothers and daughters to spend part of Mother's Day weekend together.

"They can do something good for their health and be pampered at the same time," Gilliam said. "Women of all ages will really enjoy themselves and send a vital message that they are taking care of themselves."

Insurance may be filed at the time the woman receives the mammogram on May 8.

Gilliam said some women who come to the event might be eligible for free mammograms through a grant Holston Valley has received from the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. Eligibility is based on certain financial criteria, and a woman goes to the Sullivan County Health Department to determine whether she qualifies.

Mammograms are an important diagnostic tool for breast cancer. Annual mammograms are recommended for women who are 40 and older. A woman should have her first mammogram when she turns 35.
